What is Trauma?

The word trauma means wound or injury. You can see a traumatic event as something that was emotionally overwhelming for you and it was not possible for your mind and nervous system to process it.

When we think of trauma we think of major events like accidents, physical and sexual abuse or war. And while this is true a trauma can also be something that looks very unimpressive and even “normal” to us. It can be as simple as a baby crying for a long time alone in its crib and it doesn’t know if someone will come back.

In those situations, we adopt beliefs about ourselves and behavioural patterns that saved us back then but are less then helpful for us today. And in addition to that our body keeps reminding us of how it felt, because the emotions weren’t processed, and our nervous system still thinks it has to safe our lives by repeating the same patterns. Trauma always goes along with hiding and suppressing parts of yourself and thus not being fully connected to others.

Does it apply to me?

Probably yes. It is the norm in our society to have experienced trauma because the awareness of this is very low. It is almost impossible to not experience trauma, because we have not learned how to help kids process difficult situations or we are not even aware of that we are causing them. (Because the generations before us have experienced the same trauma and see it as the norm)

How do I know if I experienced Trauma?

If you are showing symptoms that are troubling you like anxiety/stress, difficulties to take breaks, difficulties making boundaries, money problems, fear of showing yourself/being rejected, having a very loud inner critic etc. – there must be a cause behind it.

Also, if you are having difficulties living the life you want, not feeling satisfied, struggling with inner peace – you must have had some sort of trauma in your life. And as I said – it is more likely that there was trauma in your life than not.

What can the symptoms be, how does it affect my life?

Trauma that is stuck in your body can show itself in many ways:

  • A loud inner critic
  • Unwanted beliefs and patterns
  • Anxiety, Stress, Panic attacks
  • Low energy
  • Pain and tension
  • Health problems
  • Any mental health issue
  • Money problems, success blocks
  • Low motivation and procrastination
  • Self-sabotage
  • Feeling like you don’t belong
  • More struggle than ease

As Musicians:

  • Tension and pain
  • Performance anxiety
  • Low motivation
  • Difficulties experiencing flow
  • Pressure and competition
  • Practicing with a lot of resistance
  • feeling like your worth is dependent on your abilities/talents
  • fear of failure/mistakes

How does Trauma heal?

The simple answer is: by making new experiences and updating your nervous system and subconscious mind.

How that works is a more complex answer. In our session you will experience what it means to heal trauma and if you want to know more about this, I recommend you listen to my podcast! (That is coming soon)

Do you need to work through old memories with hypnosis to heal from Trauma?

No. It is not necessary there are many other ways that I also apply in my work. Hypnosis just speeds up the process and can bring about a transformation very quickly. But only in combination with other methods that address the nervous system and the body.

I also offer coaching sessions without hypnosis for everyone who wants to work long term with me or when we decide that hypnosis is not the right method for you.
